Where to protect your trademark: Ukraine and other markets
Choose the countries where your brand needs protection before choosing a filing procedure. Registration in Ukraine does not automatically protect it in every country where your website is accessible.
From business plan to market list
Make three lists: current sales, planned market launches that are being prepared, and longer-term ideas. For each market, note the brand, goods or services, launch date and budget. This helps justify spending and avoids choosing territories simply by the number of countries in a package.
Compare filing procedures
WIPO explains the main options: applications to national or regional offices, and international filing through the Madrid System. Regional registration operates within the relevant system; it is not worldwide.
Under the Madrid System’s rules, you need a connection with the office of origin and a basic application or registration. You designate the countries or regions you need, and their offices decide on protection under their own rules. An international application does not eliminate possible refusals.
What to check before deciding
- Whether the procedure covers the markets you need.
- Whether the applicant and basic application meet the chosen route’s requirements.
- Whether the name has been checked in those territories.
- What costs may arise when filing and responding to objections.
Give a specialist your priority markets and launch schedule. Ask them to compare procedures for that list rather than an abstract “international registration” with no territories defined.
